"J'ai commencé à m'intéresser à photographier les cafés de Paris parce qu'ils sont, pour moi, représentatifs du mode de vie locale, un véritable microcosme de la culture parisienne. Un café est comme le métro à 5 heures du soir. Où d'autre peut on trouver une telle diversité de la population en un seul endroit; un échantillon de l'humanité de tous milieux, classes et origines ?
Le café est un lieu de rencontre où tout le monde vient se retrouver, se reposer, discuter, réfléchir, manger et boire, et surtout s'amuser. Le nombre d'activités y est sans limites. Une base même de la vie sociale, le café dépasse sa fonction unique d'un lieu où on prend son café quotidien. Mon objectif était de figer sur pellicule quelques uns des visages différents et des actions variées qui se trouvent dans un café typique."

"I became interested in photographing the cafés of Paris because to me, the are truly representative of the way of life here, a real microcosm of Parisian culture. A café is like the Métro at 5p.m. Where else can one find such a mixture of people within a single location; a cross-section of humanity from all different backgrounds, classes and walks of life ? A café is a gathering spot where so many people come together to meet, to rest, to discuss, to think, to eat and drink, and most importantly, to enjoy themselves. There is no limit to the number of activities which take place in Parisian café. A pivotal part of social life, the café today has gone way beyond being simply somewhere to have one's daily cup of coffee. My goal was to capture on film some of the many different faces and the wide variety of diversions which can be found in a typical café"
